Roasting Chestnuts

Enjoying the sparkle of the bright Christmas lights at the darkest time of year, taking in the fresh air that comes with the icy weather, warmth of crackling fireplaces and the season of cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg spices. Most importantly the taste of buttered turkey with cranberry sauce and crisp golden potatoes.

To me traditional Christmas day food in the UK consists of  sausage swirls for breakfast, Turkey with vegetables (brussell sprouts, potatoes, parsnips, peas and carrots), stuffing and pigs in blankets washed down with a glass of wine for the main meal and of course dessert.

While many would go for the traditional Christmas pudding, I prefer desserts such as apple crumble with custard, trifle, raspberry pannacotta and Christmas log.

Also minced pies with mulled wine or cider which you can have any day any time in the Christmas Season.

There are many news articles, articles on line, suggestions on tv on which big store you should go to to get the best turkey, the best stuffing, the best dessert so on. The secret is that the best meat is at your butchers, the best veg is at your farm shop and the best stuffing and dessert is home made. If you put in a few fun hours of preparing it and putting it together, that is where the magic happens and  you will have food far more delicious than anything you can buy ready made in the store, and also healthier

. You will have also supported your small and local shops, the true sources of sustainable, fresh and honest food.

Dont forget the gravy! Seasons Greetings!!
